The Chicago Visit

Posted October 9, 2009

I know the nickname "Windy City" has nothing to do with actual wind, but it sure was windy and wet for our trek to the land of traffic and deep dish pizza on Thursday. This was the full monty Chicago experience too. None of this train and taxi stuff. We drove all the way down in all the traffic to the heart of the city, parking a couple blocks away from the Tribune Tower. A brisk walk in the rain took us over to WGN Radio for my first tour of the building ever.

What a place.

In terms of history and broadcasting, it doesn't get much better than this. I enjoyed just looking at all the old pictures they have framed throughout the hallways. Our tour guide was one Rob Hart of the news department there now. Of course Rob used to work in Milwaukee with me.

WGN has a huge main studio. You could hold a presidential debate in that bad boy. I took one of dozen or so mics for a little test drive...

I also had a chance to have a nice pre-show chat with Garry Meier in his office.

For my money, this guy is the best thing on radio. Hands down. Don't bother to ask questions.

You can check out his show on WGN afternoons from 1-4, 720 on your AM dial. Wait, does anyone actually have a radio 'dial' these days?

Anyway, we caught a nice lunch near WGN, then I was able to talk with both the program director and the general manager there. You know, this is NOT your father's GN. Proof in that pudding is the recent hire of Garry. They're moving in a direction that is very appealing to me. But I must admit, as I roamed those halls thinking about the fact that this is WG-freakin'N in the third largest radio market in the country, there was a bit of 'I'm not worthy' running through my head. Then again, maybe I am worthy?

In any case, all in all it was a fun and very productive day.

Phil, you are worthy. Hell if you ended up on WGN I might start listening to Chicago radio.

You have a great radio personality and I would love to hear you on the air again, even if it were in Chicago!

Do you need us to send e-mails to WGN?

I would love to listen to you on WGN...they'll be lucky to have you!

I Haven't found a home for my radio on my drive from work as I can't listen to the Green House without you! Looking forward to seeing where you land and would listen to you in Wisconsin as you talk from the land of Chicago.

Hey Der Cianciola once, are you sure it was Meiers and not Cliff in Grundy County once hey??

I would love to hear you on WGN. Did you did you notice their windows where people could look into the studios to watch the broadcast off the streets? I'm sure you did, similar to the "fish bowl" at State Fair.

Am I missing something, or is that the reason you went to Chicago?? Is there a possibility??
WAY AWESOME! I thought you were visiting Rob Hart!! Take Chicago by storm and remind them Milwaukee is a "suburb" of Chicago!!

Phil,

I thought you were on vacation!!!
No formal announcement. No going away party!!

That sucks!!!!

Call me slow but i thought maybe you were on vacation (yes a very loooong vacation)..

I agree with countless others, the "green house" is now not even a thought anymore. I have listened to you for years and you made some of my bad afternoons turn to smiles on the way home or when still stuck at work.

I hope you find a great job and i really hope i am able to tune in.

What is wrong with TMJ anyway. Keep the geezer but let the talent go.?

Anyway good luck sir.

WGN radio sounds like an incredible opportunity, I think they'd be foolish not to hire you. Plus, I still get WGN on my radio way up here so I guess if you can't be in Milwaukee, Chi-town would be a decent 2nd option. Just don't become a Bears fan okay?

I don't mind WGN but liked it better without the silliness, just like I liked TMJ when they had Robb Edwards, Gordon Hinkley and the other adults. Can't tell you how many times the Greenhouse and the morning show have turned me off, or at least the radio. Only guy I really like there now is Gene Mueller.

I'm willing to listen to a Chicago station. For you Phil, anything. Our whole family misses you on the radio. It would be nice to have something to listen to on my way home from work.

I can not believe that Green is still on The radio. He's old, jokes are stupid, and likes to argue about nothing. Phil, look at this as a blessing that you don't have to work with him. TMJ's demographic is too old for your blood.

Phil would love to hear you on gn. I listen to them more any local station. Love Garry, but switched back for Green house at 3:00. No reason for that anymore guess i'll stick around for Steve and Johnny.

While I would love for you to land on WGN and give the 'manglement' of TMJ the thrashing they so richly deserve, one has to wonder where you would land on the schedule. Is Milt Rosenberg ready to hang up the mic? If so, 9-11 M-F I know what station my radio dial will be turned to!

I listen to WGN often and think you would be a perfect fit!

WGN perfect I listen to it all the time, even up here in Sheboygan. TMJ has become to political, so after 8:30 I switch the dial to 720. Keeping my fingers crossed!

I listen to WGN some each day & would really be happy to hear you there. They've changed many of their formats--think you'd really do great there!

Is there anything we can do to help you w/WGN? Let us know, we're willing and able!

Phil, enjoying your updates Re: Chicago and headlamp fix'in. The test broacast is just a glimpse of the great things to come, I can tell.

Enjoyed the test broadcast.

I want to echo everyone else's sentiments here; I hope WGN will hire you, and if they don't have an opening, I hope someone will go to bat for you just as soon as they do.

And I still don't understand WTMJ.

Phil, problem is, GN is not doing well either, radio is struggling big time right now. Spike ODell is gone, saw what was happening with the Tribune bankruptcy. Kathy and Judy, gone. In a desperate attempt to remain solvent, they get Meier, who's not bad, but it's not WGN. Never liked the girls, but they lost a ton of listeners when they were booted off. But after a few months, nobody remembers them, life goes on.

Phil - While I now live in WI, I grew up in the 'burbs of Chicago listening to Wally Phillips and crew on WGN. Very warm place in my heart. It would be a great fit for you.

New WGN is great, hated Kathy and Judy almost as much as I despise Syke(o). Once morning drive news is off I have it on WGN through Noon; you'll be a great fit on that whistle.

Assume you did lunch and left as there is no mention of Steve Cochran. His 4-7 show is very popular and it's my opinion that it's the most entertaining of all of the WGN 720 shows.

Phil- I once thought the people that I worked for had their positions because they were better than me, knew more than me. Then when I watched the decisions they made I thought...What are they thinking? I have been a publisher, general manager and owner of a few print publications. I have worked for Thompson Newspapers, Lee Enterprises, Journal Communications and other less known companies. I have seen many good people have one door shut only to see another open. Never under estimate yourself or what you are capable of. You were given a chance and you made the best of it. Now believe in yourself and show the world what made you such a great radio personality in Milwaukee.

You would be super on WGN. A really good spot for you to start would be their Saturday morning show and as a fill-in host. Hope this happens for you.
